Q. Antonius Balbus, 83-82 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.41 g, 12 h), Rome. S•C Laureate head of Zeus to right; on the god's head, countermark of IMP VES (retrograde) in incuse rectangle. Rev. Q•AN[TO•BALB / PR] Victory in fast quadriga to right, holding wreath in her right hand and palm and reins in her left. Babelon (Antonia) 1. Crawford 364/1c. RBW -. Sydenham 742. For countermark: Howgego 839 and Pangerl 100. Rare with this countermark. Slightly rough and with a few banker's marks, otherwise, fine.

From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.

The IMP VES countermarks were applied under Vespasian (69-79), who revaluated worn Republican denarii such as this one to put them back in circulation.
